Opening of the 2026 Parliamentary Year: Strengthening Democratic Governance

The 2026 Parliamentary Year of the Legislative Assembly was officially opened with a ceremony at the Montserrat Cultural Centre on October 6, 2026. The event commenced with the welcoming sounds of the Genesis Steel Orchestra. The programme featured a musical rendition and an inspirational speech, both of which underscored the significance of the occasion. The theme for this year’s opening was “Strengthening Democratic Governance: One Parliament, One People.”

The ceremony was attended by a wide cross section of the public, representing various sectors of society, from individuals who have served within the parliamentary sphere to citizens with a vested interest in the work of the Legislative Assembly. Their presence reflected the spirit of the theme and underscored the importance of collective engagement in the democratic process. This message was further reinforced by a presentation from former Member of Parliament and former Minister of Education and Health, Mr. Charles Kirnon, whose remarks highlighted the vital role of public participation in strengthening democratic institutions.

Mr. Kirnon captured the essence of the theme in his remarks:

The theme of this year’s opening, strengthening democratic government: one parliament, one people, is not just a slogan. It is an urgent call to action. It reminds us that Parliament is not a battleground for partisan warfare. It is the sacred house of the citizens. Every seat in this chamber represents the hopes, the struggles, and the future of all our people.

It is hoped that the theme will resonate not only with those entrusted with serving as Members of Parliament, but also with citizens across the island, fostering a greater understanding of the role each person plays in building and strengthening our democracy.
