Agenda & Legislation

Legislative Agenda

The Legislative Agenda is based on the existing priorities as indicated by Ministries and Departments. It may be amended from time to time by the Cabinet.

The Constitution

The Constitution of Montserrat sets out the powers and duties of the Governor and Government of Montserrat, as well as certain rights of the people.

Laws

The Legislative Assembly makes the laws which govern Montserrat and these are consolidated from time to time. The laws have been consolidated up to January 2019.

Bills

Bills are introduced to the Montserrat Legislative Assembly to be scrutinised and debated before becoming a law. These bills are developed to benefit and protect.

Acts

Acts are primary legislation which have been passed by the Montserrat Legislative Assembly and received assent thereafter. Eventually these Acts will form part of the Consolidated Laws of Montserrat.

SROs

SROs are subsidiary legislation made by the Executive on the authority of the Montserrat Legislative Assembly. They include proclamations, rules, regulations, orders and resolutions.

Committees & Reports

Committees

Committees consist of a few Members of the Legislative Assembly who are appointed to carry out specific tasks. From time to time, committees are appointed to deal with specific matters.

Summary Reports

Summary Reports are prepared in relation to each Sitting of the Montserrat Legislative Assembly. These reports provide a synopsis of Bills that have been introduced or debated in the Assembly.

Resolutions

These are motions adopted by the Legislative Assembly in order to make a declaration of opinion or purpose. The Assembly may also thereby make a decision or exercise a particular power.
