Montserrat Youth Parliament Revival Gains Momentum with Dynamic Leadership Workshop

The reviving of the Montserrat Youth Parliament received a welcomed boost last weekend, marking a pivotal step in empowering young voices across the island. The Youth Parliament serves as a vital platform for youth to voice their concerns and engage in meaningful dialogue on issues impacting their lives and communities.

As part of the initiative to reconvene the Youth Parliament, a dynamic workshop was held on Saturday, November 1st, 2025, at the Look Out Auditorium. The session welcomed enthusiastic participants aged 15–29 who expressed interest in becoming members of the Montserrat Youth Parliament.

The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Kamalie Mannix of Antigua, a distinguished youth advocate recognized across the region for his leadership and commitment to youth development. Mr. Mannix previously served as a Youth Ambassador with the Department of Youth Affairs and played a pivotal role in establishing the Antigua & Barbuda National Youth Parliament Association, where he served as President. His influence extends beyond his home country, with contributions to youth initiatives in territories such as St. Kitts & Nevis. His work has been recognized by the OECS “YES In Action” initiative, which showcases young leaders across the Eastern Caribbean.

Opening remarks were delivered by The Hon. Speaker Marjorie Smith and Dr. Judith Baker, Clerk of the Legislative Assembly, both of whom underscored the importance of youth participation in governance. Mr. Jayesh Sadhwani, Montserrat’s newly appointed CARICOM Youth Ambassador, also offered brief but inspiring words to the participants.

Six core areas were covered during the workshop, each designed to equip attendees with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective youth leadership:

  • Public Speaking Fundamentals
  • Introduction to Parliamentary Debate
  • Civic Engagement & Advocacy
  • AI for Youth Leaders
  • Eastern Caribbean Youth Parliament Network (ECYPN)
  • The Way Forward for Montserrat Youth Parliament

The workshop was a resounding success, with participants actively engaged throughout. It served as a foundational step in preparing these young leaders to take up the mantle of youth representation—whether as elected officers or supporting members of the Youth Parliament.

Montserrat now eagerly anticipates the emergence of a new generation of youth ambassadors who will champion the voices of Montserrat’s youth and advocate for the issues that matter most.
